Dorans On The Pier
Doran's On The Pier next door to The Oar House, has a display of fresh fish worthy of a viewing. The thing is, even if you have never eaten a bit of fish in your life you will be tempted to buy some fresh Gurnard at €7/50 a Kg. and you will be back for more. Freshness is the word, like the Oar House Special, all fish is catch of the day landed by local trawlers berthed just three steps from the front door. Kathleen Hardy is the manageress, all the way from Australia, and her unique style certainly appeals to Irish customers.
The Doran family are part of the Howth fishing scene. Seán is the shop proprietor. His family settled in Howth from co.Wexford in the fifties. His father Michael who died a few years ago was very well known as a great fisherman and the owner of many boats. Michael Doran left his legacy to his family, of how to do good business. Although they got out of the fishing boat business his brother Pádraig is a Skipper on the Celtic Warrior, and Michael Jr. is a Net Maker in the Marine Supplies & Hardware Shop a few doors up on the pier.
Directions: Halfway up West Pier on the left.
